What IS Hedwig About?

Hedwig is a rock 'n' roll musical about a fictional rock 'n' roll band called The Angry Inch. They're led by an outrageous transgender singer named Hedwig, formerly a German 'slip of a girlyboy' named Hansel, who had a sex-change operation in order to escape from East Berlin as a married woman. The story is told from Hedwig's perspective as the audience "follows" her and her band as they tour the country in the shadow of rockstar Tommy Gnosis, with Hedwig relating her life story and her thwarted dreams of rock stardom.
